Sergeant Arnold Vincent Andring

Sergeant Arnold Vincent Andring, 24, died while Prisoner of War on April 30, 1951, in Korea. Arnold Vincent Andring was born on October 20, 1926, the son of Raymond and Gertrude (Martin) Andring, on the family farm in Waukon Township, Norman County, MN. Arnold was the eldest of eleven children and grew up on the family farm. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and attended country school through grade eight and then Mahnomen High School. Arnold helped his family with farming. Arnold enjoyed farming and performing a hard day of work, knowing that he as a youngster could keep pace with the other adults. Arnold was drafted into the United States Army in 1945, and was assigned to the occupation forces in Germany. While there, he met Hannah Anneliese “Ann” Schroeder, and they were married on August 7, 1948. After his discharge to the Army Reserves in late 1948, Arnold and Ann moved back to the family farm near Gary, MN. They stayed in the area for a short time before moving to a farm north of Mapleton, ND, where Arnold worked as a farm hand. Arnold was recalled to active duty in September of 1950 and entered the Korean War on November 27, 1950. Arnold was a member of Company L, 3rd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy in South Korea near the village of Chaum-ni, on February 14, 1951, and died while a prisoner on April 30, 1951. His remains were not positively identified until recently. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. Sergeant Andring was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. Survivors include two brothers: Leonard (Joanne) of Moorhead, MN and Richard (Darleen) of Gary, MN; three sisters: Lucille Gish of Mahnomen, MN, Claire Cook of White Bear Lake, MN, and Beverly (Virgil) Amsden of St. Paul, MN; a sister-in-law; Doreen Andring of Lakeville, MN, and many nieces, nephews and extended family. Arnold was followed in death by his wife, his parents, brothers: Vernon, William and David; sisters: Helen Lindberg and Mary Moore; nephew Larry Gish, and niece, Michelle Amsden. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Mahnomen. Time of Gathering will be at Anderson Family Funeral Home on Friday, April 24th from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m with a 6:30 p.m. Prayer Service. Full Military Honors will be provided Burial will take place at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Mahnomen.
